Explore Mt Elgon in Uganda : Mt. Elgon is one of the five mountains in Uganda, a majestic volcanic mountain that is found in eastern Uganda in both Kenya and Uganda with 95% of the mountain in Uganda, so most people will say the mountain borders Kenya. This mountain stands at an impressive 4,321 meters above sea level. Its been dormant volcano for at least 2000 as per the time of writing this article with the last known occurring in the 1800s.

People visit this mountain often and they do several activities, but the main one done is hiking to the summit, done usually during the dry season. Other activities are animal viewing, nature walks, birdwatching and many other activities. The mountain area is also an animal conservation area and its and surrounded by a protected area the Mt. Elgon National Park that is home to several endangered species, including the African elephant, leopard, giant forest hog and many more
Mt. Elgon is considered sacred by local communities, and they believe it holds spiritual powers. The local Bagisu people believe that Mt. Elgon is the dwelling place of God and also the final resting place of their ancestor/ancestors (MASABA). The ancestor(s) are said to be buried in the mountain’s caves and peaks and that their spirits manifest every now and then.
The locals also believe the Mt. Elgon was created by the god of thunder by hurling a lightning bolt to the earth that in turn formed the mountain. Though other people explain that this mountain was formed as a result of a massive volcanic eruption that spewed out lava and ash and formed this mountain.
Climbers are always told that there are spirits that can harm them if they don’t show respect to the mountain. There is also a bigfoot creature that can attack you; though this creature has never been scientifically reported.
There are a number of myths and beliefs about this mountain but of them have never been scientifically proven.

The mountain has several hiking routes but the most famous are Sasa and Sipi trails; the trails are divided into difficult, moderate and easy to climb. The difficult is mostly for the pro climbers and easy for the amateurs.
As you plan to climb you need to find ways of acclimatizing with the high altitude; usually by spending some days at lower elevations.
Climbers must be aware of altitude sickness and take necessary precautions plus the unpredictable weather conditions that may affect your hike. Things like rain, heavy winds etc.
Before you climb this mountain make sure you are fit, then, obtain hiking permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Mt. Elgon National Park headquarters and your tour operator.
You will then join your well trained and certified guide for the hike that takes a day or days depending on the specific you are doing. On your hike look out for amazing views and these monumental stops Sasa River Camp, Mude Cave Camp and Wagagai Peak.
