Mountain Karisimbi is one of the 8 volcanoes of Virunga ranges chain and it is currently the tallest standing at the altitude of 14,787 ft, karisimbi volcano is situated on the border of Democratic republic of Congo and Rwanda that is between Virunga national park and volcanoes national park. This volcano is surrounded by other Virunga volcanoes that are mount Mikeno, Mount Bisoke and Mount Nyirangongo.

Detailed itinerary for the safari
Day 1: Kigali city tour and transfer to volcanoes national park
The first of the safari is for a city tour and transferring to Volcanoes national park, you will start the day with morning breakfast, meet your safari driver a representative of Focus East Africa Tours who will brief you about the safari then checkout of your hotel and drive to the city tour for a city tour. Kigali city is one of the cleanest cities in Africa and it consists of many historical sites such as the Kigali genocide memorial site, Gisozi genocide memorial center where you will learn about the horrific Kigali genocide of 1994. You will also visit Kimironko market for craft and souvenir shopping, and many more. From the city tour you will have lunch and then head for volcanoes national park, upon arrival in volcanoes national park you will check into your lodge, have diner and stay overnight.

Day 2: hiking Karisimbi volcano
The second day of the safari is for hiking the first shift towards the summit of Karisimbi Volcano, on this day you will wake up early in the morning for breakfast and then drive straight to the park’s headquarters for briefing about the hiking. In the briefing rules and regulations about hiking will be read to you by a ranger guide, register and be assigned guides. At exactly 10:00 am together with your packed lunch you will start hiking and as you hike you will pass through ridges and encounter bamboo forests, beautiful calderas and enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding. On this hike it is helpful to carry essentials like a bottle of drinking water, a hiking stick and gloves. Amidst the hiking you will make a stopover for lunch, rest and then proceed with hiking to the campsite where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 3: hike up to the summit, descend and transfer back to Kigali
The third day of the safari for hiking the last stretch to the summit of Karisimbi volcanoes and transfer back to Kigali for your departure flight, you are to wake up early in the morning, have breakfast then leave the camp and continue with the hike to the summit which takes approximately 3-4 hours. At the summit you will be rewarded with scenic views of beautiful surrounding landscape, green forest cover and views of volcano Nyamulagira and Nyirangongo which are apparently still active. From the summit you will descend from the volcano heading to the starting point and the park’s headquarters, you will exit the park heading to Kigali city, on your way you will make a stopover in Kinigi for late lunch and when you reach in Kigali city you will be dropped off at your hotel or at Kigali international airport for your departure flight.
