Detailed itinerary for the safari
Day 1: land in Kigali and transfer to Gisenyi- Congo border
On the first day of the safari you will be picked from your hotel in Kigali after early morning breakfast or at the airport upon your arrival as long as it is before 11:00 am, your safari drive will brief you about the safari and then embark on your journey to Goma to cross into democratic republic of Congo. In Goma town you are to check in with the tourism office located at Grande barrier border post where you will receive both your mountain gorilla trekking permit and Nyirangongo volcano hiking permit. From the post you will to your accommodation facility, have lunch and have an evening of relaxation as you get ready for tomorrow’s activities.
Accommodation is got from Kibumba tented camp situated near the trail head of Nyirangongo volcano or Bukima tented camp situated adjust to Virunga national park
Day2: mountain gorilla trekking experience
On the second day of the safari you are to wake up early in the morning for morning breakfast, then leave your lodge and head to the park for a mountain gorilla trekking experience. In the park you will head to Bukima patrol post where you are to be briefed about mountain gorilla trekking experience, be assigned the group/family you are to trek and also hire porters to assist you on the safari. From the post you will start your search for mountain gorillas in the forests of Virunga, looking for mountain gorillas takes a bit of time and greatly depends on where the gorillas spent the night and it usually takes 1-2 hours. After locating them you are to spend only one hour with them and in this hour you can take pictures as long as your flashlight is off, in one hour you will be amazed with the huge size of the gorillas and the female gorillas attending to their young ones. After the experience you will drive back to your lodge, have ate lunch and have a relaxing evening at your lodge or you can engage in optional bird watching and nature walks . In the evening you will have dinner and stay overnight.
Day3: volcano Nyiragongo hiking experience
On the third day of the safari you will wake up early in the morning for breakfast and leave for the park’s headquarters where you are expected to be at before 8am, at the park’s headquarters you will be briefed about the safari, meet our guide and hire a porter then start your hiking to the top of Nyirangongo volcano, as you hike you will enjoy beautiful sights as you encounter many species of plants and bird. On your way you will go with your packed lunch and you are to spend the night at the camp house at the top of the volcano, at the top of the volcano you will enjoy sight of lava and the scenic views of the neighborhood. In the evening you will have diner and stay overnight.
Day 4: Descend volcano Nyirangongo and transfer to Gisenyi
On the fourth day of the safari you will descend the volcano after morning breakfast and head to Kibati post, you have to be at Kibati by 11:00 am and at Kibati post you will meet your driver then embark on your journey to Gisenyi. Upon reaching in Kigali you have lunch and after an evening of relaxation and at night you will have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 5: Kigali city tour and depart
On the fifth day of the safari you will wake up early in the morning for morning breakfast, checkout of your hotel and drive to Kigali for a city tour which offers you a chance to visit sites like Kigali genocide memorial site, kaplaki crafts village for souvenirs and king’s palace. After the city tour you will have lunch and then be dropped off to the airport for your departure.
Note: your Rwanda Visa expires immediately you cross into Congo so you will have to reapply for another while at the border and find it ready after the tour.
