Detailed itinerary for the safari
Day 1- arrive at Grande Barriere
The first day of your safari is a transfer day from Kigali to Grande Barriere in Goma, on this day you will meet your safari driver in in Kigali who will brief you about your safari and transfer to Grande Barriere in Goma. At Grande Barriere you will check into the tourism office situated on the Grande Barrier border post building adjust to passport control, at the office you will receive your gorilla trekking permit and Nyiragongo hiking permit. From the office you will drive to your lodge where you will spend the night while on your safari.

Day 2 – gorilla trekking experience
The second day of the safari is for a gorilla trekking experience and optional nature walks and bird watching experience, on this day you will wake up early in the morning for morning breakfast and drive to the park’s headquarters where you will meet your guide and also be briefed about the safari. From the park’s headquarters you will climb into the forests of Virunga national park in search for mountain gorillas, the process of locating the mountain gorillas takes approximately1-3 hours and after located them you are only allowed to spend one hour with them. After the trekking you return to your lodge for lunch and in the evening you can chose to rest or engage in bird watching or nature walking experience.

Day 3 – Nyiragongo volcano trek
The third day of the safari is generally for hiking the volcano of Nyiragongo, on this day you will wake up early in the morning for morning breakfast and then transfer to kibati ranger post. You have to be at the post by 8:30 am, be briefed about the safari and then start your hiking and at this post you can hire porters. Hiking/climbing Nyiragongo volcano takes about 6 hours to get to the summit meaning you go with your packed lunch which you will eat on the way.

Day 4 – descend the crater and transfer to kibati
On the fourth day of the safari you descend from the summit of mount Nyiragongo to kibati, at the bottom of Nyiragongo volcano you will leave the park for Grande Barriere in Goma crossing the border and drive off to Kigali. In Kigali you will have lunch and them be dropped off at the airport marking the end of the safari.
