Volcanoes National Park fees
Volcanoes National Park fees: Volcanoes national park is a mountain gorilla haven and the only mountain gorilla habitat in Rwanda situated in North western region of Rwanda, the park covers an area of 160 square kilometers which is dominated by rainforest and consists of 5 volcanoes which are part of the Virunga chain. These volcanoes include Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo.
Volcanoes national park offers a bunch of amazing safari experiences with mountain gorilla tracking as the remarkable activity in the park, there is many other activities such as golden monkey tracking, Dian Fossey Tomb hiking, hiking on mount Bisoke, Muhabura and Gahinga and nature walks.
Volcanoes national park fees are drafted by Rwanda Development Board which is in charge of governing Volcanoes national park, these fees are as follows

- Filming and professional photography
- Filming and professional photography is charged US$ 5,000 filming fee and includes 3 consecutive days for mountain gorilla filming and professional photography
- Mountain gorilla filming and photographer crew is charged US$ 12,000, the crew has to have a maximum of 8 people and this fee is payable in additional to the filming fee
- Filming without mountain gorillas is charged US$ 1800
Important points to note volcanoes national park fees
- Tourist status/categories
Activity fees in Volcanoes national park were drafted basing on the category/status of the tourist as below
Rwandese (RC) – Rwandese are nationals of Rwanda with valid national identity cards or passport
Foreign Non-Residents (FNR) – Foreign Non Residents are international visitors/tourists, these tourists are from outside Rwanda or East African Community countries that is Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi.
East African Citizens (EAC) – These visitors are nationals of East Africa Communities and foreign residents of East African Community countries, East African Community countries include Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi. East African Community Residents are foreign visitors living in East African Community countries, these visitors have to be in possession of valid immigration documents, working permits and passports.
Foreign Residents (FR) – Foreign residents are foreigners with residence in Rwanda, these visitors have to present valid documents from immigration or working permits.
Students –students are visitors from any educational institution from Rwanda and any East African Community countries, the students are required to present citizenship document, residence card and student cards which is proof.
Children – children are tourists who are below the age of 15 years.
- Age limits and group sizes for tourism experience
Age limit
Tourists/visitors must be of a minimum age of 15 years of age to participate in mountain gorilla trekking, Musanze cave tour, karisimbi crater, Muhabura, Bisoke, and Gahinga hiking.
Tourists must be a minimum of 12 years of age to participate in other primate trekking
Children of 7 years of age and younger are to participate in guided nature walks and a proof of birth certificate or passport is need.
Group size
- For mountain gorilla trekking experience a group of 8 people is permitted to take part in the experience
- For golden monkey tracking a group with a maximum of 16 people are permitted for this experience
- For Musanze cave tour a group of 25 people are allowed on this experience per trip, 2 trips/visits are available per day one starting at 10:00 am and the second one at 3:00 pm
- Means of payment
Payment for an experience at volcanoes national park can be made through
- credit cards such as Visa, Master Card, China Union Pay and other major credit card
- payments by cash is accepted at Nyungwe forest national park
Note: though cash payments are accepted, payments by credit cards are more preferred for ease and speed of the process

Verification process
Verification for activity permits in Volcanoes national park is done by the park’s stuff before you leave for the activity, the process of verification involves a tourist presenting his or her original copy of the permit for the respectively experience . The permit consists of a booking reference number which is got from IREMBO and RDB sales and observation office.
Check-in
Checking in Volcanoes national park is a safari experience is at 0700hrs with in exception of karisimbi hiking and Musaze caves experiences
Note:
Karisimbi hike – Karisimbi hike experience takes 2 days with overnight camping at the volcano, schedules departures of this safari experience include
- Saturday to return on Sunday
- Tuesday to return on Wednesday
- Thursday to return on Friday
Muhabura hike – Muhabura hike is a one day experience, check in and permit validation for this experience is done one day before the experience. Meeting with the guide on this experience is at 6:30 am at Musanze Tourism Information Center, hiking experiences on this volcano are available on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
