Lake Victoria is ranked as the largest lake found in Uganda covering a total surface area of about 59,947 square kilometers. more so, it is considered to be the second largest fresh water body in the world and it is shared between countries like; Tanzania where it occupies about 49% covering a total surface area of about 33,700 square kilometers, in Kenya where it covers a total surface area of about 4,100 square kilometers (6%) and in Uganda where it occupies 45%. Lake Victoria in this country is famously known to be among the commonly visited areas, which has contributed a lot towards the development of the country and improved the tourism industry.
Lake Edward.
Lake Edward is ranked as the 15th largest lake on the African continent and it is located within the Albertine Rift of the East African Rift sharing borders with other countries like; the Democratic Republic of Congo from the northern part of the lake shore. Lake Edward covers a total surface area of about 2,325 square kilometers, it stands at an elevated area of about 920 meters (3,020 feet), and it occupies a distance of about 40 kilometers long.
Lake Albert.
Lake Albert is the seventh largest lake in Africa however; it is considered the second biggest lake in Uganda covering a total surface area of about 160 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide. More so, this lake stands at an elevated area of about 619 meters (2,031 feet) above the sea level and it is about 51 meters deep and around 19ml wide among others.
Lake Kyoga.
Lake Kyoga is famously known to be a shallow and swampiest lake in the country, which covers a total surface area of about 1,720 square kilometers standing at an elevated area of about 1,033 meters above the sea level. This lake is dominated and surrounded by many papyrus reeds and it is covered with water lilies. More so, Lake Kyoga is about 5.7 meters deep.
Lake Bunyonyi.
Lake Bunyonyi is located in the Southwestern region of Uganda and it is situated between districts like; Kisoro and Kabale. This lake is considered to be the most deepest lake in the country due to the fact that it is recorded to be about 900 meters deep hence also being ranked as the second deepest lake in the whole world after Lake Tanganyika which is found in Tanzania. More so, Lake Bunyonyi is also commonly referred to as “the place of many little birds” and seen as the birders paradise because it is a home to a variety of many bird species that can be spotted around different areas while touring around the lake. Therefore, some of these birds to see include; grey shrike, pied wagtail, pin tailed where, fan tailed widow bird, pied wagtail, grey crowned crested crane, chested bee-eater, specked mouse bird, cinnamon, bronze manikin among others.
